My paintings take jazz music as a conceptual point of departure. Utilizing the improvisational quality and abstract nature of this type of music, I translate it and interpret it using biomorphic shapes, marks, lines and color. Maintaining the abstract nature of the visual composition; I draw on the canvas using graphite and poured enamel paint. My objective is to create a similar experience to that of listening to a musical composition however it is through visual media rather than audio sensation. The concept of imagination being provoked through image to actually hear the rhythms, beats, melody and syncopated beats through the combination of drawing and painting.

The methodology I employ of poured paint lends itself to the inventive and emotional concept of the improvisational quality intrinsic in jazz music. I am interested in a type of controlled spontaneity. The drawing quality in the poured painted line raised above the canvas surface begins to activate into the space as a sculptural (real time) element. So it is the orchestral quality of all the parts of the painting that must come together in sync and an undefined manner that will create that image that may transcend definition. It is the essence of the total composition and full experience of “concert” that I am after. Each painting in the FEVER series is a total experience of passionate movement and sound. The painting elements activate the canvas simultaneously activating the imagination to hear the music generated from the abstract image.
